Sculptra® Aesthetic FAQs
What is Sculptra Aesthetic?
Sculptra Aesthetic (injectable poly-L-lactic acid) is biocompatible and biodegradable, made from a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, which is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body as it works to replace lost collagen. Poly-L-lactic acid has been used safely for decades in dissolvable stitches and as a facial injectable since 1999 in over 30 countries.
How does Sculptra Aesthetic work?
Sculptra Aesthetic is injected into the skin to target the underlying causes of the signs of facial aging. It can give you noticeable results that emerge subtly and can last for up to 2 years. It begins to work within the deep dermis, where your skin’s structure is reinforced as Sculptra Aesthetic helps to replace lost collagen. This reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness of your shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds that have depleted over time. Sculptra Aesthetic is different because it gradually and subtly corrects these facial wrinkles and folds. This can provide a refined, more youthful looking appearance.
Where in the face is Sculptra Aesthetic used?
Sculptra Aesthetic is suitable for treating deep folds between the nose and the mouth (nasolabial folds) also called smile lines, the lines framing your mouth (marionette lines), and chin wrinkles.

How many treatments of Sculptra Aesthetic are required?
On average, 3 injection sessions are needed over a period of a few months. The number of injection sessions and the number of injections per session vary from person to person. Each Sculptra Aesthetic injection works to gradually improve the overall appearance of facial wrinkles and folds. Because the process is gradual, the effects of Sculptra Aesthetic are achieved through completing the full course of treatment as recommended by your physician. Sculptra Aesthetic is injected in the deep dermis in a series of treatments administered by a Sculptra trained physician.
How many Sculptra Aesthetic injections are there per treatment session?
The number of injections at each of the treatment sessions will vary depending on the degree of correction and the treatment plan determined by you and your physician.
Are there any risks associated with Sculptra Aesthetic treatment?
Side effects of Sculptra Aesthetic may include injection site discomfort, redness, bruising, bleeding, itching, and swelling. Other side effects may include small lumps under the skin that are sometimes noticeable when pressing on the treated area. Larger lumps, some with delayed onset with or without inflammation or skin discoloration, have also been reported.
What should I do after each Sculptra Aesthetic treatment?
Proper aftercare is necessary in order to help get the best possible results. We will give you specific instructions at each injection session. Within the first 24 hours of treatment, help reduce swelling by applying a cloth-wrapped ice pack to the area for a few minutes at a time. Avoid applying ice directly to the skin. Post-treatment, massage the treated area for 5 minutes 5 times a day for 5 days, as recommended by your physician. This will help evenly distribute Sculptra Aesthetic. Until any initial swelling and redness goes away, avoid excessive sunlight and UV lamp exposure
What is the recovery process after Sculptra Aesthetic treatment?
Most patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately following treatment.
When will I be able to apply makeup after Sculptra Aesthetic injection?
Usually makeup can be applied several hours after treatment. Consult your doctor after treatment.
Are there other options?
There are a variety of dermal fillers available in the US. Dr. Johnson can discuss options with you.
Is a skin test required before treatment with Sculptra Aesthetic?
No. Because Sculptra Aesthetic does not use any human or animal components, no allergy testing is needed prior to treatments.
How much does Sculptra Aesthetic cost?
Because Scultpra Aesthetic treatments are tailored to individual patients, cost will vary from person to person. The best way to determine your individual cost is through a consultation.
